Red light therapy can offer numerous benefits:
- more energy and vitality
- healthier skin and hair
- faster muscle recovery
- reduction in inflammation and pain
- improved circulation
- stimulation of collagen production
- After a few days: increased energy, mental wellbeing and improved mood.
- After 2–4 weeks: physical changes (healthier skin, more flexible joints, reduced pain).
Daily use is ideal. If this isn’t possible, at least three times a week is recommended.
- Distance: 15–50 cm from the light source
- Duration: 10–20 minutes per area
After 20 minutes, the cells no longer absorb light.
Yes, but no more than 30 minutes in total on the same area. It better to have 2–3 short sessions.
Yes. Excessive exposure reduces the benefits.
- Ideal duration: 10–20 minutes per area.
They aren’t essential: you can simply keep your eyes closed. If you have sensitive eyes or find the light irritating, it is recommended that you wear them.
- In the morning: to boost energy and concentration
- Before exercise: to activate muscles and improve circulation
- After exercise: recovery and pain relief
- Evening: yes, but avoid intense red light in the 2–3 hours before bed (opt for NIR instead).
It acts primarily on skin, hair and nails:
- stimulates collagen and elasticity
- reduces wrinkles and sebum
- improves skin quality
- helps combat hair and eyebrow loss
It penetrates deeper and acts on:
- Brain and memory: improves cognitive function and reduces anxiety/depression
- Brain circulation: increases oxygenation of the brain
- Childhood motor skills: accelerates motor recovery when combined with training
- Mood disorders: improves symptoms of depression and anxiety
- Before: improves blood flow and prepares the muscles
- After: it speeds up muscle recovery and reduces pain and stiffness
- prevents and reduces inflammation
- improves joint flexibility
- increases bone density
- stimulates collagen synthesis
- stimulates collagen and elastin
- reduces acne, eczema and rosacea
- improves microcirculation and cellular nourishment
- reduces wrinkles and signs of ageing
- accelerates the healing of scars and wounds
- strengthens hair follicles
Yes:
- NIR light stimulates the metabolism of fat cells
- red light improves skin firmness and elasticity
Yes, but but always consult your doctor.
- Keep a greater distance from the abdomen (40–70 cm).
- Use NIR to reduce the heating effect.
Yes, but at lower doses:
- Distance: 40–70 cm
- Duration: 5–10 minutes
- Always seek medical advice first.
Yes. It promotes the regeneration of muscles, tendons and bones, reducing pain and inflammation.
It depends: some antibiotics cause photosensitivity. Always consult your doctor.
Consult your doctor if:
- you suffer from hyperthyroidism
- you are pregnant (especially for abdominal exposure)
- you are taking photosensitising medication
- you are undergoing cancer treatment
- you have bleeding wounds
- Before or after: it can support the immune system.
- During: it best to stop, especially if you have a fever.
No, it does not damage them.
- Silicone does not reach critical temperatures.
- Metal does not react: the light acts only on the surrounding tissues.
No, because vitamin D is only synthesised by UV rays.
Up to 50,000 hours: with daily use of 30 minutes, this equates to decades of treatment.
Yes.
PBMT has been actively and successfully used in Europe for almost 30 years. There are more than 200 positive double-blind studies confirming the clinical effect of PBMT.
Published in the world’s leading scientific journals:
Nature, Pain, PNS, Blood, BMJ, Spine, Muscle and Nerve, The Lancet, Circulation, BJSM
30 PBMT publications per month
Over 4,000 laboratory studies and more than 400 randomised controlled trials
Over 2,500 published clinical studies and research reports have demonstrated the efficacy of PBMT for a range of health issues. Considering only the limited literature on PBMT in the field of dentistry (370 studies), over 90% of these studies confirm the clinical value of photobiomodulation therapy.
PBMT has been a mainstay of veterinary practice for decades.
Over the last 6 years, professional sports teams have begun to use PBMT.
Over the past 10 years, 8 systematic reviews have supported PBMT.
The American College of Physicians’ guidelines include a “strong recommendation” for photobiomodulation therapy as a non-invasive treatment for acute, subacute and chronic low back pain. (2017)
BMJ PBMT for non-specific chronic low back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found “moderate quality of evidence” and “clinically important benefits” in the short term. (2016)
BMJ, a sports medicine journal, found “strong evidence” for PBMT in a systematic review of surgical and conservative interventions for frozen shoulder. (2010)
The BMJ’s 2011 clinical evidence recommendations for tennis elbow now include PBMT.
The American Physical Therapy Association’s guidelines recommend PBMT for Achilles tendinitis. (2010)
Lancet systematic review: “PBMT reduces pain immediately after treatment in acute neck pain and up to 22 weeks after completion of treatment in patients with chronic neck pain”. (2009)
World Health Organisation (Bone and Joint Task Force) on neck pain: “Photobiomodulation therapy” more effective than no treatment, sham or alternative interventions” (2008)
Yes
Photobiomodulation therapy is even more effective when combined with other forms of therapy, including physiotherapy, chiropractic care, exercise, grounding/earthing and a natural diet. During the initial assessment, recommendations may be made regarding the most suitable approach for your condition.
No
You may experience a slight increase in discomfort 12–24 hours after a treatment session. This is the result of the tissues absorbing the light and the healing process beginning. This is more likely to occur in cases of chronic conditions and usually subsides within the next day or two.
Yes
PBMT is completely safe, regardless of the patient’s age or state of health.
The FDA has established that photobiomodulation therapy is safe, and the only contraindication (warning) is not to use it directly on the eyes and not to use it during pregnancy.
Over the last 30 years, photobiomodulation therapy technology has been formally accepted in many parts of the world, including Canada, the United States, Brazil, Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and Japan. During this time, no long-term adverse effects have been reported as a result of its use. It is considered non-invasive, painless and safe.
Hundreds of studies have shown that photobiomodulation therapy is safe and effective. PBMT is non-invasive, non-toxic and non-thermal. Unlike other forms of radiation, PBMT is beneficial and does not damage tissues.
Yes
It has been shown to be more effective and safer than pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories for a range of musculoskeletal conditions.
